Last Thursday I presented my thesis to my board at Parsons and now (well, as soon as I finish some University paperwork) I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography and Related Media from Parsons The New School for Design. Because of some projects I took on outside of school, I pushed back my presentation date a whole semester. It ended up being a great decision and I got a lot of new work done during the Fall. I'm relieved to finally be finished and feel pretty good about the final results. I froze up a little during the Q & A portion of my defense but left with a lot of good things to think about and some new confidence.
Next month, January 29th to be exact, I am jumping on a plane with my friend Courtney and using a one-way ticket to Berlin. I have no plans beyond the 29th, other than a trip to Dublin to help out with the IGVFest 2009 in Dublin for a week or so, then returning to Berlin with possible stopovers in other cities. Reasons? A lot and none at all, really. I want to continue to make work and not get sucked into a permanent job. I have been wanting to live somewhere other than the USA for a while now. There is a great artist community and art world in Berlin (so I hear, I've never been). I have no plans of how long I'll be gone or where I'll go afterward. It's all exciting and scary. I don't know if it'll be something I'll do for 6 months and then come back to New York or if it will just open more doors for me to chase after....we'll see. All I know is I'm attempting to learn German and I'm getting rid of most things I own. Feels great.
