Bush declares state of emergency in Fla.
"It certainly looks like it's going to impact a significant portion of Florida before it's all over," said Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center.
Florida has been hit by eight hurricanes in the past two years.
"We put up the storm shutters today and we're hitting the grocery store tomorrow," said Ben Cassis, who, along with his father-in-law, spent nearly $2,500 for a powerful generator Sunday.
People freak the fuck out everytime and it's usually for nothing. I think after being through all hurricanes that hit Florida in the past 24 years, I don't get worried until it's a category 3, maybe a strong 2....which is sustained winds of like 110 I think? I could be wrong but it's something like that. A tropical storm or category 1 is like a strong afternoon storm. You don't need to freak out and fill up every gas tank you have and buy generators and prepare your make shift bomb shelter. Our school stopped canceling classes unless an actual hurricane was hitting us during the time we would be having classes....so we had to go to school in Tropical Storms and it was fine.
I'm very happy to miss out on the festivities of Hurricane Season this year. Cut to me crying in a few months when I have to walk to school in the snow....

It's pretty rare for schools in NY to cancel classes for snow... mostly because public transportation is going to keep running. Good luck with that one!
Note: Andrew was kind of scary... and we didn't get anything remotely bad from it. Also, I have family memebers who lost houses in the Hurricanes from last year.
I know I know, hurricanes are serious business. However, it's a lot of unecessary freak outs instead of rational planning. You missed out on the last three years....everyone is paranoid as shit now.
